In the winter of 2009 I decided I would visit the grave of one of my Revolutionary War ancestor, George Stovall Smith, in the 200th year after his death. For years my best source for the location was no more exact than "four of five miles from Keene, Kentucky." In the end, after about two months of searching, I would find George and Frances' graves to be more like one thousand feet from Keene and on private property. Permission to visit must be obtained. The grave site is badly overgrown by brush and trees. The stone wall around the site is decaying. George's marker is tipped by roots. Frances' remains upright. The trip from Oregon to the Smith graves was well worth the effort and expense. Visiting a place has a way of bringing perspective to a family history that is nearly impossible to gain in any other way. |
