 James Wilson & Amanda Hampton
Discussion on the following subjects is always welcome from other researchers.

James Wilson and Amanda Hampton applied for their marriage license on August 23, 1823. The bond was granted on August 25. It isn't known just what day they actually married on.

Other related family names on the document are:

  1. Thomas S. Smith, Guardian
  2. Anderson Sallee [brother-in-law of Amanda]
  3. Martha Hampton [mother of Amanda]
  4. Willis. G. Hampton [brother of Amanda]

I have seen Amanda Hampton called 'Mary' Amanda Hampton quite a few times over the years. As information is documented and re-documented things have a way of changing. The name Mary probably started with this document which stated that James intended to 'marry' Amanda Hampton. Mary was not her name.

The will of Martha Frances Hampton, dated May 3, 1838, clearly shows that Martha called her daughter Amanda D. Wilson. It also indicates that James and Amanda were both living on that date. From these two documents we know that James and Amanda Wilson had at least fifteen years of married life together. Their son, OFD Wilson, was probably born during the earliest of those years and he was in Clark County, Missouri on October 23, 1845 where he and Nancy Francis were married.

Could this indicate a time period in which James and Amanda died? Not necessarily. If OFD Wilson was born very early in the marriage he could have been around 21 years of age when he and Nancy were married. The law required that he be at least that age to marry. He may have been an adult and not necessarily an orphan taken in by the Hamptons.

Between 1825 and 1830 seems to be a likely time for OFD Wilson to have been born. There are no other known offspring of the marriage of James and Amanda. I am unaware of any proof documents that clearly define a family relationship between Oscar F. D. Wilson and James and Amanda Wilson. However, James and Amanda are almost certainly Oscar's parents.

Martha Hampton's will also names her daughter, Aramanta Wilson, who is thought to be named Araminta Doma Hampton. Aramanta was the wife of William Wilson, executor of Martha's will. It appears that both Amanda and Aramanta had middle names which began with 'D'.

Oscar, a son of John & Martha Hampton was married to Mary Jane Wilson, a daughter of Edward and Nancy Wilson. Araminta Hampton, another child of John and Martha Hampton married another of Edward and Nancy's children, William Wilson. Yet another child of John and Martha Hampton, Amanda, was married to a Wilson — James. It seems prudent to think that with all three Hampton siblings marrying Wilsons ... the Wilsons were also siblings of each other as well. However, Oscar F. D. Wilson's parents remain unconfirmed. Hopefully the day will come when more will be known about that.

James Wilson & Amanda Hampton were married in 1823

Mary Jane Wilson & Oscar Hampton were married in 1829

William Wilson & Araminta Hampton were married in 1829

Judith Hampton married Anderson Sallee in 1822 - Anderson's signature is on the marriage bond of James Wilson and Amanda Hampton in 1823. Anderson and James Wilson were brothers-in-law as they were married to two Hampton sisters. Here is yet another reason to believe that all three Wilsons were siblings — yet, no proof has been located.
